Meiosis Overview

Meiosis is a special type of cell division of germ cells in sexually-reproducing organisms used to produce the gametes, such as sperm or egg cells. It involves two rounds of division that ultimately result in four cells with only one copy of each chromosome. In humans, this means the chromosome number is reduced from 46 to 23. Meiosis consists of meiosis I and meiosis II. In meiosis I homologous chromosomes are separated into different nuclei. As in mitosis, it is spindle fibres that “pull” the chromosomes and chromatids apart.
