Robert Hooke

When English scientist Robert Hooke used a crude compound microscope to examine a tiny slice of cork in 1665, he made the discovery that would lead to the development of cell theory. He conducted analysis and produced several findings, which he recorded in his book “Micrographia,” which also contains all of the creatures’ descriptive illustrations that he had seen under a microscope. Hooke came up with the term “Cells,” which is derived from The Latin word “cellula”, because the cork cells, which had a form akin to boxes, reminded him of apartments in monasteries. Hooke was unaware of the existence or not of cells.         

Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek

Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek created basic microscopes with just one lens and excellent resolution to investigate tiny creatures and plant tissues. He is frequently called the “father of microbiology” and is credited with giving freshwater protozoans their name, “animalcules.” He wrote about his own teeth’s microorganisms in a detailed manner. And he saw the sperm cells that are present in both humans and animals for the first time.

Theodore Schwann and Matthias Schleiden

The “Founders of the Cell Theory” are how many refer to them. German botanist Matthias Schleiden examined plant tissues under a microscope. In his writings from 1838, he declared, “All plants are composed of cells and products of cells.” He researched the role of the nucleus in plant cell division. and mentioned that the process of producing new cells involves the old cell nucleus. Matthias Schleiden was close to a German scientist named Theodore Schwann, who studied animal tissues. He suggested the theory that all animal tissues are composed of cells with a nucleus and presented three compelling statements. These statements were further modified to the Principles of Cell Theory.

Rudolf Virchow
